Google's theme for the year 2013 is called "Connect with Respect." The theme was built based upon the company's commitment to keeping people safe online. Google has created resources like Teach Parents Tech, Privacy Videos, Family Safety Center and Google Security Center to help netizens develop strong privacy and security habits.
In addition, Google's Good To Know website, the company's biggest-ever consumer education campaign, offers privacy and security tips. It teaches people using the Internet the importance of 2-step verification, locking your computer when you step away, and making sure your connection to a website is secure.Furthermore, the Good To Know site also explains some of the building blocks of the Web like cookies and IP addresses. Technology can be sometimes confusing, and the industry often fails to explain clearly enough why digital literacy matters, says Google.
Meanwhile, Alma Whitten, Director of Privacy of Product and Engineering at Google had this thing to say about the search giant's Safer Internet Day initiative:
"Protecting our users is one of our top priorities at Google. Whether it's creating easy-to-use tools to help you manage your information online or fighting the bad guys behind the scenes, we're constantly investing to make Google the best service you can rely on, with security and privacy features that are on 24-7 and working for you."Isn't it good to know that Google is at the forefront of making sure that the Internet should be free for everyone to use, while at the same time being vocal enough in reminding Web users to be cautious and responsible with their online activities? I believe we ought to give Google a lot of credit for doing so.
