Users of mobile devices running Google's Android operating system
can now expect easier search and navigation in more than 100 million
places with Google's new Maps for Android app.
Google said the latest iteration of its app promises not just a
streamlined design but also the information the user will need, "when
and where you need it.""The search box at the
top enables you to explore more than 100 million places globally
making it easy to pinpoint businesses and/or points of interest with
addresses, phone numbers, and reviews from people you trust," it said.
Users can swipe the info sheet at the bottom to scroll through each result, or tap the “list” icon for a full list of results. Also, an interactive “info sheet” at the bottom of the screen can offer
complete details about each place, ranging from star ratings to store
hours.
Other features of the new map app include:
- 3 billion miles of turn-by-turn directions, globally
- 1 million transit stops in 800 cities globally
- 1 billion square feet (and growing) of indoor floor plans of airports, malls and more
New navigation feature
Included in the latest app is a Navigation function, though still in
beta, that features voice-guided, turn-by-turn navigation.A user can also swipe the navigation banner at the top to preview
upcoming turns on the map, or use the step-by-step list view.Meanwhile, multiple views can make the map more relevant to a user, who
can tap the Views menu on the bottom right to add new layers of
information on the map."Explore the world's
terrain from afar with highdef satellite imagery, and easily find
public transit routes when you're visiting a new city," Google said.
