The 94-year-old former president of South Africa is hospitalized after undergoing surgeries to remove gall stones. He was admitted to a Pretoria hospital on December 8 after he
suffered lung infection. The trouble started in 1988 when he suffered
tuberculosis. He recovered from the disease then but the doctors said he
shall suffer from lung problems in future too.
After dealing with his lung infection, Mandela underwent endoscopy to
remove his gall stones followed by a terrible pain. The surgery was
successful and he is now recovering gradually. However, the doctors said
that he still needs to be at hospital.
"They occur when fluid collects in your gall and crystallizes. The
stones can cause discomfort", explained Mark Sonderup, the Vice-Chairman
of the South African Medical Association.
He is receiving treatment at the facility with a regular medical
supervision and routine checkups. The doctors are saying that he shall
recover soon and shall be fit; however they have not yet confirmed about
when he shall be discharged.Nelson Mandela was the first democratically elected President of
South Africa and led the nation from 1994 to 1999. In 2001, he was
diagnosed with prostate cancer. He was 83 at that time and recovered
successfully from the deadly disease after being treated by
radiotherapy.
