Tanzania: 'Shun Selfishness, Serve Others'

TANZANIANS have been urged to shun selfishness in the name of religion, regionalism and other divisive factors and instead focus on using their talents towards serving others.
The call was made in Dar es Salaam by Prof Esther Mwaikambo, soon after receiving the 2013 Dr Martin Luther King Jr Drum Major for Justice Award from the US Ambassador to Tanzania, Mr Alfonso Lenhard.
Prof Mwaikambo, who is the current Vice-Chancellor of the Hubert Kairuki Memorial University of Health Sciences, received the award in recognition of her tireless efforts to promote human rights and access to education and health care for Tanzanian women and girls.
Ms Mwaikambo who is a professor of paediatrics noted that there is more turmoil in the world and in Tanzania nowadays for people seeking justice. "There is more happening, in terms of some people killing and destroying others and their property in the name of religion, regionalism and other divisive factors.
That instinct of driving for gains and for selfish interests is gaining ground faster than we can handle," she said. She added that the trend is dismantling all efforts made by the nation's founder, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, to unite the country and motivate his countrymen and women to fight poverty, diseases and ignorance.
