Higher learning institutions in Tanzania have for the first time adopted
the academic registration information system (ARIS) developed by the University
of Dar es Salaam Computing Center (UCC) it has been learnt.Development and
institutionalisation ARIS was almost a paradigm shift as far as academics
records management in Tanzania were concerned.
A press statement issued by the UCC in Dar
es Salaam said for the first time in the history of UDSM and the country at large,
ARIS has enabled automation of the admission process through the
software.According to the statement, the software went on by enabling
automation of room allocations to students in halls of residence. It also
facilitated examination results processing from continuous assessment to
University Examination processing to transcript issuance.
This has significantly not only reduced
operational costs in terms of stationeries and time but has also improved
efficiency and increased transparency.ARIS is as of now being used by Ardhi
University, Institute of Social Welfare, University of Dodoma, Mzumbe
University and UDSM. The statement noted another key development achievement as
development of PMO-RALG Planning and Report (PlanRep) system.
PlanRep System is software developed by UCC
for handling the planning and reporting activities under the Prime Minister’s
Office – rural administration and local government (PMO-RALG).
The system is currently being used by all
district councils in Tanzania and it provides inputs to the strategic budget
allocation system (SBAS) also developed by UDSM through UCC for preparation of
the national budget under the Ministry of Finance.
“This software has a huge impact at a
national level whereby it has improved efficiency, consistency, uniformity and
transparency in the planning of activities and report on the implementation of
the panned activities countrywide,” the statement said.
The last achievement is development of the
TCU Central Admission System (CAS) Central admission system (CAS) under
Tanzania Commission for University (TCU) is a system which was developed by
UDSM through UCC for TCU for admission of applicants into public and private
higher learning institutions.
The impact of CAS is quite enormous at
national as well as individual levels especially on reducing costs and
improving efficiency. The system has also eliminated the possibilities of
forgeries on O-Level and A-Level examination results.Historically, UCC started
providing ICT services to the University as an autonomous entity in 1980.
However, as a result of business expansion
and growth in its service provision capability, UCC was transformed in 2001
into a fully fledged ICT business of UDSM managing the university’s
state-of-the-art ICT infrastructure including training facilities with video
conferencing, e-learning and fast wireless internet as well as other support
technologies.
As industry leader in terms of technical
capability and with a broad range of ICT products and services, the centre
plays a crucial role in supplying the ICT market with world class ICT
solutions.UCC values are drawn from the long-established UDSM’s commitment to
quality assurance and desire to impel Tanzania to socio economic advancement in
the 21st Century.
